Explain how economic contexts, including commercial and not-for-profit funding, affect the distribution of newspapers. Refer to The Guardian and The Daily Mail to support your answer.


Daily Mail:

  • Adapt online content (soft news) to increase younger readership
  • Funds itself through advertising
  • Social media presence- clickbait
  • 70p for print
  • Free at the point of access- online

Guardian:
  • Free at the point of access online
  • Asks for voluntary donations 
  • $2 a copy- up from $1
  • Physically shrunk to save money
Some newspapers have gone online only
The Times and The Sun have a paywall
Some papers have gone free- Metro, Evening Standard
